Choosing Your Puppy: A Joyful Journey

Welcoming a puppy into your life is such an exciting adventure! Each little one in the litter has their own quirks, charm, and sparkle — and part of the joy is discovering which pup feels like your perfect match.

It’s completely normal for families to feel a bit of pressure at this stage, hoping to find the “perfect puppy.” The truth is, Cavoodles are such a wonderful breed — affectionate, people-focused, and full of love — so you’ve already made the best first choice by choosing them!

What truly matters is how each puppy’s personality fits with your family, and how you’ll guide and shape them as they grow. Think of this moment as the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Take a deep breath, enjoy the process, and trust that the right puppy will naturally find their way into your heart.

The checklist below will help make your decision easier and more fun.

Personality First

  • Every puppy will look adorable — what matters most is temperament.
  • Think about your family’s lifestyle: active, quiet, social, or home-based.
  • Ask how each puppy responds to new sounds, people, and situations — confidence, gentleness, or playfulness all matter differently to each family.

Don’t Stress About the “Perfect” Puppy

  • Cavoodles are affectionate, people-focused, and adaptable.
  • Overthinking can create unnecessary pressure — the right pup usually chooses you as much as you choose them.

Be Open on Gender

  • Male vs female often matters less than people expect.
  • Both genders are affectionate, trainable, and wonderful with children — focus more on individual personality than sex.

Consider Size & Coat

  • Puppies in the same litter can grow to slightly different adult sizes.
  • Coats vary too (curly, wavy, straight, fleece vs wool) and can affect grooming needs.
  • Think about what will suit your home (e.g. allergy needs, brushing tolerance).

Watch How They Interact

  • During visits or videos, notice who comes forward, who hangs back, and who is curious or cuddly.
  • Mostly the bold pup is perfect for an active family, while the quieter pup thrives with gentle children or retirees.

Trust the Breeder’s Guidance

  • As the breeder, I’ve lived with these puppies from day one and can share insights into each pup’s developing personality.
  • Balance what you feel in your heart with the experienced recommendations provided.

Ongoing Guidance & Training is Key

  • A puppy’s temperament is only the starting point. Their lifelong personality and coping skills are shaped by the guidance, boundaries, and training you give them.
  • Socialisation, consistency, and positive training methods help them learn how to navigate the world with confidence.
  • Think of your puppy as a blank slate — the right support and structure will bring out the very best in them.

Remember — They All Grow Into Companions

  • Whichever puppy you choose, with love, training, and time, it will grow into the perfect family member.
  • The joy is not in finding a “ready-made perfect pup,” but in building a lifelong bond together.
