Frequently Asked Questions

You can wait for your Waterhill Puppy on either our Litterlists or our Standby List.

  1. On our Litterlist you have priority selection of puppies from a successful confirmed or current litter

To reserve your spot on the Litterlist we request you pay a $500 reservation fee. We keep our Litterlist to a reasonable number depending on the Mumma, how many puppies we can expect, how many pups we see on an ultrasound etc so that waiting time is kept to a minimum. For example—should we hope for 4 puppies, we would accept 3 families on the Litterlist.  See Litterlist Deposit Terms
  2.  Our Standby List is for anyone who would like to be informed about puppies that may become available once Litterlist families have chosen their puppies.

We get asked a LOT about the difference between male and female puppies – and while there are some exceptions, generally speaking males tend to be affectionate, laid back, even and easy going, whereas females can be more spunky and sassy. If there is  super smoochy/loving puppy in a litter it is always a boy!

DNA testing is the only way to know the genetics of our breeding dogs in relation to genetic diseases, coat traits, colours etc. Knowing this allows us to select the best breeding pairs to ensure our pups will have the perfect coat type with low shedding and teddy bear looks AND will not develop any of the testable genetic diseases.

When DNA testing for diseases there are 3 possible results for the pair of chromosomes responsible for the disease:

1. Clear – this means the disease causing gene is not present – both chromosomes are “clear” of the disease gene.
2. Carrier – this means the one chromosome is disease causing and one is not. This dog does not have the disease, will not exhibit disease symptoms or have medical problems as a result – but they “carry” the disease in their genetics.
3. Affected – this means both of the chromosomes are disease causing, the dog will be medically “affected” by the disease and will pass on the disease causing gene to all of its offspring.

This is why DNA testing and selective breeding is so important – because without it you could choose 2 perfectly healthy dogs that are both carriers of the same disease and unknowingly actively breed puppies with genetic diseases.

Each Waterhill Dog has passed our rigorous selection process before they are used for breeding including

        1. Temperament tests
        2. Health tests including heart and patellas,
        3. Size, colour, coat type and conformation
        4. DNA testing

Our parent dogs are friendly, loving, happy dogs that live as members of our family.

NO dog breed is 100% a non-shedder and responsible breeders will not make this claim about their dogs – however selective breeding with dogs carrying certain genetics/DNA for coat types will produce minimal shedding puppies.

All dogs (indeed all mammals) shed their hair. The amount of shedding can vary greatly in dogs with poodles and some “oodle” breeds being low or minimal shedders. Those with curlier coats also don’t drop hair as the hair they do shed often is caught in their coat.

If a dog carries 2 furnishing genes in their DNA (Gene RSPO2), they are considered “double furnished”. Furnishings is another name for the facial hair on dogs such as the moustache, beard and eyebrows – for cavoodles this presents as a hairy face including hairy muzzle and is an indication the dog is not a straight coat.

Double furnished breeding cavoodles are very desirable because their offspring will all be furnished, and have the “Teddy Bear” look cavoodles are famous for.

Yes. We will allow the transport of puppies to their new families anywhere in Australia (or overseas). Any transport fees or associated transport fees such as crate hire or purchase are additional to the cost of a puppy. Once puppies have left our care, they have left our responsibility.

This is a daily handling routine we do with our puppies that includes 4 holds and 10 touches.

4 holds – is holding the puppy 4 different ways  including upright, head down, own their backs and on their side.

10 touches – is touching and stroking the puppy in 10 places including rubbing around their neck, on and in ears, over face, around and inside their mouth, along their back from head to tail and tail to head, on their tummy from front to back and back to front, pulling gently on each leg and tail, rubbing feet and rubbing between toes.

This routine takes only minutes, but is vital to ensure our pups are exposed to the sensation of various types of touch and handling to desensitize sensitive areas and make future handling by your vet, groomer and family easier.

It is really important to following my feeding guideline for the first 4 weeks your puppy is home which includes Royal Canin Puppy dry food and wet food, mince, and puppy loaf. My Puppy Care brochure included in your Puppy Pack includes all the details of feeding ratios and timing.
