Male vs Female cavoodle Puppies: What’s the Difference?

Chai (1)

One of the most common questions we’re asked at Waterhill Cavoodles is:

“Should we choose a boy or a girl?”

It’s a great question—and the honest answer is that both male and female cavoodle puppies make wonderful family companions. While there are some general tendencies between the sexes, individual temperament, early handling, training, and the right match for your household play a much bigger role than gender alone.

That said, here’s a helpful guide to the typical differences families often notice.

Male cavoodle puppies

Common traits often seen in male cavoodles:

  • Affectionate and people-focused
Boys are often described as cuddly, loving, and very bonded to their humans. Many happily follow their people from room to room.

  • Playful and goofy
Male puppies tend to keep a puppy-like joy for longer, often delighting families with their silliness and enthusiasm.

  • Easygoing companions
Many families find boys a little more relaxed emotionally, especially in busy households with children.

  • Great with kids
Their tolerant, social nature can make them excellent family dogs.

Things to keep in mind:
Un-neutered males can be a little more distracted during adolescence, but with responsible desexing, training, and structure, this is usually short-lived and very manageable.

Female cavoodle puppies

Common traits often seen in female cavoodles:

  • Intuitive and observant
Girls often tune in closely to their people and surroundings, noticing changes quickly.

  • Confident and self-assured
Females can be wonderfully capable and independent, often settling into routines easily.

  • Highly trainable
Many families find girls mature a little faster and enjoy learning new skills.

  • Strong one-on-one bonds
Females often form deep, loyal connections with their chosen people.

So… Which Is Better?

The truth is: Neither is “better” — they’re just different.

At Waterhill Cavoodles, we see far greater differences between individual puppies than between genders. Temperament, energy level, confidence, and sensitivity vary from puppy to puppy—regardless of whether they’re male or female.

This is why we focus on:

  • Careful, ethical breeding

  • Early socialisation

  • Ongoing temperament observation

  • Thoughtful matching between puppy and family

Whether you welcome a boy or a girl into your family, a well-bred, well-raised cavoodle will grow into a loving, loyal companion with the right guidance and care.
